Rewarding Contribution
Over the past 20 years, the MapleStory community’s voluntary content creation, driven by creativity and passion, has significantly enhanced the sustainability and scalability of MapleStory IP. To systematically support these meaningful activities, MapleStory Universe has designed a contribution mechanism.
Under this contribution mechanism, “contributors,” who enable new experiences for the ecosystem and strengthen the utility of NFTs, may be rewarded for their contribution. Specifically, “contribution” means any activity that contributes to the development of MapleStory Universe, such as activities that enhance the interoperability of NFTs and improve the sustainability of game items. The specific process to get rewarded (eligibility, onboarding compliance, and other preconditions to receive rewards) may be refined and defined as the ecosystem grows. Currently, MapleStory Universe assesses “contribution” based on two factors, namely, the key performance indicators of an application (“App KPIs”) and NESO usage.
App KPIs
App KPIs are indicators used to determine how much meaningful content is provided to players. Qualitative factors such as whether the content is “meaningful,” or “fun” are difficult to measure. However, these factors can be quantified through usage indicators such as the time a user spends on a particular app. Another method of assessing app performance is by applying weights related to NFTs that players hold when interacting with the app. Such a mechanism prompts creators to plan content towards scaling up the utility of NFTs, in other words, strengthening RX.
NESO Usage
Usage of NESO, a game token for MapleStory Universe, is one of the indicators that show the sustainability of the Universe. Steady use of tokens is essential for long-term sustainability of blockchain-based games. A stable in-game economy, both in blockchain-based games and conventional MMORPGs, requires continuous use of in-game assets to stimulate the economy, rather than mere accumulation. Creators have freedom to develop NESO-based business models such as In-App Purchase. By developing self-sustainable applications of NESO based on such freedom, creators may contribute to the sustainability of the Universe.
Apart from the two indicators mentioned above, there could be various other activities contributing to the growth of the Universe. As contributions can take many forms besides app production, the contribution mechanism will also continue to be developed accordingly. Therefore, new assessment criteria may be added, or specific indicators or weights may be updated.
Milestones for Contribution Mechanism
The contribution mechanism can be divided into Phase 1 and Phase 2. In Phase 1, MapleStory Universe lays the foundation for a ecosystem of contributors, focusing on approved contributors. In Phase 2, MapleStory Universe creates a permissionless environment that allows any person to freely contribute based on a more mature contribution mechanism.
Phase 1
During this initial phase, MapleStory Universe bootstraps the contributor ecosystem by directly discovering contributors and supporting their onboarding. Only eligible and approved contributors receive contribution rewards or benefits for initial development support, based on comprehensive internal evaluation. MapleStory Universe plans to improve the contribution mechanism by working closely with the approved contributors to collect contribution-related data and identify various types of contribution, ultimately improving the mechanism for future phase.
Phase 2
The transition to Phase 2 occurs when MapleStory Universe determines that the contribution mechanism improved in Phase 1 (i) can recognize a wide range of contribution activities by the ecosystem and (ii) has reduced the risks of abuse by addressing the known limitations and vulnerabilities. In Phase 2, a permissionless environment is introduced where the eligibility criteria are not subject to manual discretion. This allows all eligible persons to contribute to MapleStory Universe without prior authorization, with an automated system determining rewards distribution. In this phase, the contribution of each contributor is calculated based on various systematically measured quantitative indicators, in compliance with the published documents related to the rewards program. The reward distributions will occur periodically, depending on the nature of the promotional program, the timeline to receive rewards, and other factors set out in the rewards documentation.
